Trends Over Time
Yesterday, the New Jersey Department of Education released the 2025 state summative test results from the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA). Scores in both ELA and math have risen since 2022, with gains in both subjects since 2024 as well. Neither subject has yet reached pre-pandemic levels of proficiency.
Note that in 2021, the U.S. Department of Education granted New Jersey’s request to use the state’s Start Strong assessments in fall 2021 in order to meet the federal statewide assessment requirements. Therefore, New Jersey did not administer assessments in Spring 2021.
ELA: Approximately 53.6% of students in grades 3-8 reached proficiency in 2025, rising above 50.8% in 2024.
Math: Approximately 41% of students reached proficiency in 2025, above 38.6% in 2024.
